Hello, I am just wondering if anyone has any information on Helen M Rowden born in 1948. My grandmother (now deceased 2013) Sheila A Rowden born in 1944 and her were sisters and shared a father. We know nothing about that side of the family and have only just recently discovered that my grandmothers father didn't pass away in the 1950's from this website and he actually died in 1999. Any information at all will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I was born Carol Rowden. My Grand Mother's Family were Rowden from St. Thomas in Devon. The other side of her family were Knott also from St. Thomas In Devon. My Grandmother was Mary Susan Rowden. Her parents were Caroline Knott and George Rowden. There were a huge amount of Rowden's in St. Thomas around 1868 when Mary Susan was born and during the 1900's onwards which I've found out on Ancestry. They married into a family called Maunder. My Grandmother had two brothers. Samuel and William. I'd be so grateful for any information. Samuel I know eventually moved to South Wales.

Hi there. After spending the last 7 years building a full size Replica Supermarine Spitfire we have come to a decision to base it on a aeroplane flown by John Hampton Rowden.Unfortunately he was shot down and killed in action but we are looking to base our project on one of the lesser known pilots and tell their story. I am hoping to find any relatives that may be able to help us in our enquiries. Our project page is called Simply Spitfire and can be contacted through our website or Facebook page. Many thanks Steve

Hello II am Carol Rowden. Daughter of Jack Rowden and Grand Daughter of Mary Susan Rowden. I believe that some of the information about them on here may be incorrect. Mary Susan never named the Father of her two children. Neither of them knew. They were both born in St. Thomas Devon. Neither were born in a Workhouse. My Father went into a workhouse when he was four years old because he told me that he remembered Mary Susan walking with both children one in each hand to the workhouse. It was have been that Mary Susan was in the workhouse before either child was born, came out, got pregnant, had both children and then was put, and I used the word put, back in because her family turned their backs on her. There are stories of who the Father might have been but they are only stories. She did re-marry and moved to South Wales, to a widower who had three children, where she later died. My Dad never recovered from her death. Emily sadly died at the age of 27. I know that's true because my Dad was with her when she died. She had two children. Father unknown. One child was adopted and taken to Canada. I would be so grateful if anyone knows anything about that branch of the family. I'm a Author by the way. I write Mysteries and Thrillers.

Hi, I’m Anita, grand daughter of Annie (Nancy) Winifred Sostman (born 1912) nee Rowden (or so I thought) but in fact Selling, daughter of Annie Eliza Taylor and Frederick Nippard Rowden (line), (Sellen being Fred Nippard’s mother’s name). I have found out that my grandmother was registered at birth in the name of Selling and have confirmed this by ordering a new birth certificate and wonder why and does anyone know more? I have recently learned that Selling was crossed out when she went for her first job and Rowden written in its place however the boss wouldn’t accept it. It hasn’t been found but we have seen a new birth certificate obtained for her to claim her state pension with Rowden on it. I have always been told she was the first child of Frederick Nippard Rowden and Annie Eliza Taylor (Fred’s second relationship) and certainly looks like her siblings and was brought up by Fred, but I note from Kirsty’s entry on another site and the Horningsham descendant pedigree, that my grandmother is not recorded. Is anybody aware of a different father or was it just down to illegitimacy at the time as the birth certificate reads Frederick Selling and not Frederick Nippard Rowden and Annie is on the certificate as Annie Eliza Selling nee Taylor. Can anybody help me out? Many thanks

Hello... Looking for information on my 2x Great Grandmother or any other Rowdens living in or born in Kentish Town or Westbourne Park around the same time. SARAH JANE ROWDEN b.abt.1851 in Kentish Town or Westbourne Park, London, England. d.bef.1901 in West Ham, London, England. She appears on the 1891 Census as Sarah Jane Ramsey married to a William H Ramsey. Also listed is a number of children and 3 step-children including my Great Grandfather George William Tucker. (He later adopted the Ramsey surname, which was passed onto me.) I have found their marriage certificate from 1881, which lists her name as Sarah Jane Tucker. Also she appear on the 1881 Census with the 3 children as Sarah Jane Tucker (Widow). GW Tucker's birth certificate lists Sarah Jane Tucker (Formerly Rowden), and William Tucker as the father. Later children of WH Ramsey and Sarah Jane also list Rowden as the maiden name. Sarah Jane Rowden and William Tucker are a complete dead-end for me. I cannot find marriage information, etc. So any help gratefully received. P.S. There are a Sarah Jane and William Tucker on the 1871 Census, with William from Stratton, Wilts. But I have followed this line and it does not match.

Hi.
I am a member of the Heard family who migrated from Bow, Devon to Bermondsey in the 1850's. We have several Rowdon connections. I believe that my Heards go back to Newton St Cyres, due to the unusual name of Andrew Heard, migrating towards Bow around 1700, some via Crediton, but have so far been unable to prove this.
I have found a marriage of Robert Heard to Mary Rowdon on the 19th April 1789 at Newton St Cyres The only Mary I can find is Mary 1758 of Thorverton, just over 4 miles from Newton St Cyres. She could have course been a widow.
Has any Rowden/Rowdon any connection with Newton St Cyres and do they connect with Bow.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Dear Gavin Rowden
What a brilliant site.My wife and I were both born in England and we have returned to the UK to live.I am interested in tracing my relatives as we lost touch completely in New Zealand.I found some of my relatives on your site and I am very grateful. My mothers name was Amy Frances Rowden and she was born on the 21st of August 1906 in Whitstable Kent. She married Charles Thomas Coupland in about 1938( I am still researching this data) I am Donald Coupland (Born 25/01/1946 and I have a sister Maureen Anne (Born 02/03/1943) My father left us when I was 3½ months old.We were living at No.3 Kensington Gardens in Brighton. We moved to New Zealand in August 1950 when I was 4 years old.I think the entry for Winifred Rose Annie Rowden 1909-1917 is my mothers younger sister. My mother told us her sister fell and knocked her head on the footpath and unfortunately died, but the age of 8 fits her life timeline which I recall my mother mentioning.
Amy passed away on the 14th June 1996 of natural causes aged 89 in Turama Resthome in Auckland.
Thank you for making this site available.
Kind regards

Hi
According to my Grandfather's birth certificate (1890) his mother was Louise (Louisa?)Lawrence nee Rowden. His father was William Lawrence, an electro type printer born in 1854. I have not been able to find a record of their marriage. In the 1991 census William is living with his son (my grandfather) age 1 with a family called Linham and he is described as a widower. My Grandfather was born at Senegal Road and the registration district is St. Paul Deptford, London. Does anyone have a Louise/a Rowden in their family tree? ANY information will be helpfull as I have a mystery to clear up!

My Rowden links go back to Joel Rowden from Steeple Langford in the 1600s. Wiltshire record office has many Rowden wills that go back even further. Some are available online.
The family were yeoman farmers and seemed to own large parcels of land to the west of Salisbury. Several diverse locations are mentioned in two of the wills. Sheep farming hit hard times which is why the family migrated to neighbouring towns. Sarah Rowden, born 1700 married John Cooper in Warminster in 1719 and that is my line. Sarah had a sister who married John Cooper's brother. The Coopers were also natives of the Langford villages but i haven't managed to take them back earlier.
Unfortunately the parish records for Little Langford were lost/destroyed before 1700. There is still plenty more out there to unearth.

Hi, well i never expected so many rowdens , i have never come across any other than family , my farther james henry son of frederick nippard (1876-1934) has always lived in the east side of london ,like his farther before him , frederick was a boss lighterman on the river , a lighter man had the job of rowing barges up and down the river , they were skilled men knowing the ebb and flow to use the power of the river to move goods , the rest of his sons i think all worked in or around the docks as my dad was a steveadoor , not just a docker ,steverdoors worked on the ships dockers worked on the dockside, i would love to know where nippard came from as by the look of it its not a family name and where did the farther william rowden?(1801-1858) come from before horningsham.?

Hi, I am trying to trace Peter Rowden who knew the Sluter family of Archway in the early Seventies. He would have been born around 1946 and lived on Wolsely Avenue and used to drink in the Bird in Hand on Park Road, Crouch End. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

I was just wandering about the Rowden name. Does the Rowden name have a code of arms or anything like that? This is so cool, cause over here in America my name is so rare. It's good to see that I have a whole new "family" over seas.

My great-grandfather was married to Cecilia Frances Perry, daughter of Frances (b Stapleford) and James Perry. I believe these to be Frances Rowden (b.1848) and James Perry 1817-79), on your pedigree chart. Can pass on info. if you do not have it.

Hello. My ex-wife said that she had visited this site and told me of it. You may remember that she told you that the family had originated in the area of Kingston upon Thames. If any further information, limited as it is,is of use to you then please e-mail me as above. I have visited the hamlet of Rowden near Bromyard, Worcs. The local history of the area shows that a John Townley de Rowden owned the Manor Of Rowden from c1321. This passed down the family until 1721 when the last and female of the line passed the Manor to Daughter Anne Barnaby (1665 - 1772). Still in the area are Rowden Manor, Rowden Mill and Rowden Abbey. A beautifully preserved G.W.R railway Station, complete with tracks, Rowden Mill Station, is now a private dwelling. Locally, Rowden means a rough hill.

I am trying to start a family tree and will be grateful for any information about my father's family. My father was Frank Cecil Rowden born 1905. He married Ivy Charlotte Green. I have a brother Alan Rowden. My father had two brothers Percival and Archibold. Percy lived in Mitcham Surrey and had one son Eric who had a haulage firm in Devon. We know that there are members of the Rowden family in Swanea South Wales (Hughes) and in or around Tiverton Devon. Archie had two daughters. My son John who is working in Aktau near the Caspian sea was born on my father's birthday 9th Feb and he has been experiencing uncanny feelings that he must found out about his family!! so any help will oblige.

Dear Family Rowden,
I am currently writing a script for a movie based around the story of a notorious band of criminals and highwaymen known as 'The Essex Gang' that terrorised London's suburbs in the early 18th century.
It is an incredible story of early organised crime and one of the central figures in the story, and one who escaped capture for a long time was Thomas Rowden. He was eventually apprehended, sentenced to hang and then reprieved and deported to America. He will have arrived in Virginia in the fall of 1738.
Does anyone know what might have happened to him after that?
Was he the Thomas Rowden who then settled in Philadelphia?
If anyone can help I would be grateful.
Sincerely
M Crook.

My mother is a Rowden, and my uncle, David Rowden (Sydney, Australia) has done a great deal of research into our family tree. It currently traces back to 1655 with Jasper Rowden, a long line of Thomas's and Jasper's follows. Most of the tree is located in and around Kent, England with known branches in New Zealand and Australia by the 1800s of which little is known. Anyone interested in my uncle's research, I will pass on your details.

I have found during my many years of research into the Rawdon name that Rowden is one of its many variants. It originated fron the place Rawdon near to Leeds in Yorkshire but found that from 1560 that my family lived in Lincolnshire and there were 100s in the county until the mid 18th century

Found your site when I was searching for Stapleford. My interest is because there is a Mary Ann Rowden (father John Rowden mother Louise Northrup) who was married to Arnold Saph on 17/02/1830. Arnold Saph's father was Robert Saph married to Susannah (14/2/1793) in Winterbourne Earls. I believe there is a link between this Robert Saph and the father (This is the brick wall on this line) of James, John and Edwin Saph. Saph's have been in Stapleford since 1600's and from your research it seems as if Rowden is an established name in Sapleford. Any clues or hints would be really really great. All the best Barbara

I am very interested in the marriage of Catherine Duppa shown in your descendancy. It is certain that Catherine was a sister of Sir Thomas Duppa, whose monument is in the North aisle of Westminster Abbey. His Will, made in February 1693/4, mentions three nephews of his, namely Thomas and Richard Rowdon and John Rowdon deceased.
I would very much like to know when and where Catherine was born and when and where she married, if you can help me with information on this

Can anyone help.
I,m trying to put together some family history of my own,I'm not a Rowden by the way. The Rowdens I am interested in are Major and Mrs Rowden who owned and ran Bromsberrow Court Farm near Ledbury in Herefordshire.
They both died in the early or mid seventies and I think the farm has long been sold off. I believe they also owned a garage in the same vicinity Bathon Hill Mechanics (not sure about the spelling).
I have no idea if they had any children or other family in the district.
My interest is for my own family history as my father was cowman for the Rowdens for many years.
Any help or advice would be of great interest and greatly apreciated.
Many thanks

Our branch of the family came to Porthcawl in 1825 via Llantwit Major c1806 from South Molton, Devon. They have either worked as Carpenters, Millwrights or in Agriculture. The earliest reference to our direct ancestors is on a by law in South Molton dated February 1600 they can then be traced directly from David, who signed the by law, to myself and Amanda Rees (nee Rowden) who is my niece.

I actually came here looking for information on the family of a Major Burkett/Burkitt/Birket who lived in Co Dublin, Ireland and moved to Cornwall in about 1911. My grandmother Mary Gorman was their nanny. Searching for Burkett+Cornwall led me here. Pretty slim chance I'll find anything but i'm glad I got the chance to look around anyway, well done!

Interested in the surname Weldrick - I notice one of your ancestors married
Ellen Weldrick. This is a Yorkshire family which somehow ended up in Ireland -
if anyone can help explain why, please, please do so!!! Any Weldricks,
Weldrakes, Wheldricks/drakes etc please contact - lots of info to share! Best of
luck with your Rowden research - great fun, isn't it?!

Rawdon and Rowden are both found in Donegal in Ireland. They along with
Rodden are anglisised forms of the Irish Gaelic surname O'Rodain ( derived from
rod, meaning strong in Gaelic). This is a Donegal surname found mainly on the
Inishowen peninisula, mostly arond the towns of Moville,Greencastle and
Buncrana. It is sometimes also given as Mac Rodain in Gaelic, Giving rise to the
anglisised form MacCrudden.

I am originally from Whitstable in Kent. Rowdens have been there for over 400
years. My aunt did some tracing and thought we came from france, where a
De'Rouden was captain of a band of archers in the army of William of Normandy
and fought in the battle of hastings in 1066.

Congratulations on a great site. We are descendants of Robert Rowden,
Chittlehampton, Chart 12. It was great to see all the family tree laid out like
that. My Mum is the main researcher in our family and will be surprised to see
all her work done for her! It must have taken years to research all of the
families. We would love to know where you found all the records as there are
some we have not found. We'd also love to hear from any other Rowdens and see
their family trees.

I found your very interesting site whilst looking for the Rowden name. The
reason for this is that I am a frame maker and restorer and one of my clients
recently brought me a fine water colour ( approx 50cm x 70cm signed by
(?-J)Rowden and dated (?-18)86 with a hand written title on the back 'Brook and
village scene' then a village name (which is difficult to read poss. Tewinster,
Devon. I am going to photograph it this weekend and will make it availible next
week with possibly more details on the signature etc., Does anyone have any
information on a painting Rowden as this painting really is very fine and in
excellent condition. Many thanks for any help

My Great Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Ann Rowdon who married James Edward
Vicary in Crediton in about the 1860s - I have temporarily mislaid their actual
marriage date - I have it in my surrounding mass of paper somewhere - Elizabeth
Ann was born about 1838 and died on 15th Jan 1913, her grave is in the Corner of
Crediton Church where she is buried with her husband and her daughter, Ada
Martha Vicary. Elizabeth was the daughter of James and Sarah Rowden. As yet, I
have not had time to verify any information earlier than this, although it has
been suggested to me that Sarah's maiden name was Stone.

well, well. fascinating stuff i reckon. i would love to trace my family tree,
if and when i ever get the time. yeh right! although seriously, i do plan to one
day because i find the whole notion of tracing back ones family tree so
immensely fascinating. the original rowden in my lineage, my great grandfather,
was said to be originally from tenerife, and a member of the spanish navy. he
met my great grandmother when his ship docked in britain sometime around the
turn of this century. apparently he jumped ship at grays when found out he was
to return to spain. his suname was rowden nee selling. the spanish men, so i'm
told, used to carry the maiden name. he then had twelve children who all ended
up growing up in the docklands area of east london. anyone with any information
on this or any other traces of my family origins, i would love to hear from you.
