UK Census - 1891


The 1891 census was taken on the night of Sunday 5th April.

This census reveals another significant increase in the number of Rowdens from a decade ago. The previous ten years also saw a spreading out of families particularly in the southern half of England. 954 Rowdens are found which, with another 83 unfound individuals, makes a total of 1031. They are recorded living in 189 different parishes in 34 different counties.

The numbers of found Rowdens in each county are shown in this table.

Events during the previous decade (1880s) include:

  • Mark Twain published Adventures of Huckleberry Fin
  • Development and commercial production of electric lighting was underway
  • Ned Kelly was hung in the Melbourne Gaol
